Stepping Out is a fifty minute film which explores the lives of a unique theatre group of people with learning disabilties as they prepare their first public pertormance at the Sydney Opera House. The film follows this event from its beginnings showing the startling growth of confidence and “ability climaxing in the pertormers. and with their triumphant first performance. The film focuses on two members of the group: 31 year old Chris Dobbin, his girlfriend Romayne Grace, 21, who provides the films commentary. Like the other cast members, Chris and Romayne lived in the instituation sincce early childhood. Stepping out explores the warmly affection relationship and their attitudes to each other, their lives in the Home, and their hopes for the future.
It highlights the astonishing talents and capabilities of a group people normally hidden away from the world, allowing to meet them not as freaks or objects of pity, but as real people in a real situation.
Stepping Out was shot in November 1979 for international television release during 1981, International Year of disabled persons. The production received financial support from the Australian government,
the New South Wales State Government and three companies.
The The final version of the film was distilled from 15 hours of shot during the 3 and a half weeks of filming, and was edited over a 7 month period.
