Description

Margaret Wasterstam’s Swedish Television Film about the nuclear arms race and the threat of nuclear war. Filmed in the Unites States and the Middle East, the film offers an analysis of the arms race and the pressures which move it ever on and upward and shows the links between defence expenditure and world poverty. Workers from the dockyards in Connecticut where Trident is built explain why they want to keep their jobs, whilst in California a group have formed a company to make domestic solar heating equipment as an alternative to weapons.

Scientists at top secret research establishments show how the desire to create more effective nuclear weapons pushes governments to deploy these weapons. In Egypt, people have insufficient food but arms expenditure is ninth highest in the world. Politicians all over the world say that increasing armament spending is done for the ordinary people to protect them – what, the film asks, can ordinary people do to reverse this ever upward spiral?
Made in 1981 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
