Description
Examines the conflict between the idea of work being necessary and good in itself, bestowing worth and dignity on the individual, and a society where work is scarce. Gives a historical perspective of the beginnings of the work ethic, as preached by the non-conformist churches. Now there are drastic cutbacks in industry, and new technology is beginning to have a big effect on the number of jobs available.
Will the idea of the work ethic have to change? In the second part of the film, ways of changing attitudes to work, and providing dignity in other ways are explored. Schools are changing their aims and all kinds of interesting projects are being started.
