Description

Using role play, Malcolm Brown describes how a social worker deals, unsuccessfully and then successfully with the behaviour of an openly aggressive patient in hospital and a silently aggressive teenager. His approach invites the viewer to discuss examples of practice and offers guidelines to handling difficult situations. Amusing as well as instructive.

Guidelines for working with Aggression

1.  Fully accept that everyone has an absolute right to their feelings.2  Encourage and accept the full verbal expression aggressive feelings.3  Explore the reality that is creating the aggressive response.4  Don’t defend situations that the person is feeling aggressive about.5 Avoid getting into will-struggles.6  Never ridicule or belittle a person who has lost control of themselves.7  Help the client to move on to explore possible decisions that are open to them.8  Explore for possible mental or physical illnesses that have aggressive connotations.9  Be aware that violently aggressive people can bee dangerous.
