Description

Some garment manufacturers are having to close down because of the flood of cheap clothes coming from outside Europe. A comparison is made between the lives of four women who make the shirts. The one in the North of England is fighting for her rights; as one of the poorer paid workers she would like to see imports banned. The girl in Italy is worse off, her factory is closed and there is no work.

In Japan the girls work hard, production is high, but they seem to be cogs in a machine. In Sri Lanka a factory has just been opened: the people are desperately poor, and the girl’s wages of a few pounds a week have to support a large family. She has to walk miles to catch a bus to work very early in the morning. Portrays in human terms the trade/unemployment dilemma.
