Description

John Alderdice defines anxiety, talks about what it is with its physical and emotional characteristics, normal anxiety and stressful situations and abnormal anxiety that requires some form of intervention. He examines the forms of treatment available, looks at symptomatic treatment, behavioural treatment, cognitive psychotherapies and dynamic psychotherapies.

Particularly, he talks about what anxiety states are like both for the patient and for the family and talks about the very significant role that helpers have; looking at the roles of the psychiatrist, the general practitioner, the nurse, the social worker and also the caring friend or neighbour. He gives guidance that the carer might take and gives pointers to successful outcomes. This is presented in a straightforward, down to earth way helping the viewer to have of the dimensions of anxiety and how the professional and other caring person might best be involved.
