FELIX GREENE
Born in England, Felix Greene first visited China for the BBC. He travelled extensively, often in remote areas to which no Westerner had been for over 20 years. He returned with what is the most complete professional film coverage of China that has been obtained by any Western film-maker.

MINORITIES. 50 million and more Chinese are not ethnically Chinese at all. This episode covers peoples in Sinkiang, Mongolia in the north, mainly snowbound,, in subtropical Yunnan province and a Thai minority. Item length 24 minutes

THE PEOPLE’S ARMY This was a vast school of politics, engineering agriculture and culture, spending a lot of its time working out in the villages, helping with construction work, sending medical teams out and training a voluntary militia. This item 23 minutes

MEDICINE IN CHINA. There has been a great improvement in a short time in health treatment in this land of 700 to 800 million people. Traditional medicine has been combined with Western treatments. Teams of ‘barefoot doctors’ regularly visited every village. Birth control figured high in the village teaching. Acupuncture was widely used, even as an anaesthetic during operations. The curing of opium addicts was important. Item length 23 minutes

LEISURE AND SPORT. In 1972 a six day working week was the norm. On Sundays parks were full of people playing unsophisticated games. Opera, ballet and circuses played to full houses. Soccer football played by amateur teams was popular.
