Maids and Madams

£19.50

How black domestic servants were treated under Apartheid in South Africa.

Description

Examines the issues of apartheid from the perspective of black and white women under Apartheid. Some Madams were kind, some ruthlessly exploited their black maids, but the tragedy of black women was that in order to survive, they had to look after their Madam’s children and neglect their own, says Sue Gordon, a white Madam herself. Over a million black women lived in a state of domestic bondage, under paid, working long hours and at the mercy of draconian laws which separated them from their own families. Shows the personal implications of the apartheid system.
