Description

A dramatic reconstruction of a real event, in which several very severely disabled people play themselves alongside professional actors. A small group of people in a large and impersonal institution in Australia fought to be accepted as human beings, with their own standards of dignity and autonomy. One of them, John Roarty, wrote a book about their experience, in which he described the oppressive care that stifled all individuality, banned initiative and outlawed sexual and emotional relationships. They were threatened with eviction after taking their story to the press.

Made in 1980 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and language of the time and country where it was made. The issues raised are timeless. The film quality may not be to modern standards.
